Meenakshi is a Hindu goddess and the tutelary deity of Madurai, revered as an avatar of Goddess Parvati. She is also referred to as Durga and is celebrated as the principal deity of the famous Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. According to legend, Meenakshi was born to King Malayadhwaja Pandya and Queen Kanchanamalai after a yajna (sacred ritual), emerging from the fire as a three-year-old girl with three breasts. It was prophesied that her third breast would disappear when she met her future husband. Meenakshi grew up to become a powerful queen and warrior, and upon meeting Lord Shiva (Sundareswarar), her third breast vanished, confirming the prophecy. Their divine marriage is celebrated annually as the Meenakshi Thirukalyanam festival.
Meenakshi is often depicted holding a parrot and standing in a graceful pose, symbolizing strength, leadership, and compassion. She is worshipped as a form of Parvati and is believed to bring blessings, protection, and prosperity to her devotees. The Meenakshi Amman Temple is a major pilgrimage site and an architectural marvel, attracting millions of visitors each year.
