Brass Dakshinamurthy

Dakshinamurthy is a revered form of Lord Shiva, depicted as the ultimate teacher and guru of all types of knowledge, especially yoga and meditation. He is traditionally shown seated under a banyan tree, facing south, symbolizing the direction of knowledge and transformation. In this form, Shiva sits on a deer hide throne, surrounded by sages who receive his silent instruction.

His right foot is placed on the demon Apasmara, representing ignorance, while his left foot is folded and rests on his right lap. Dakshinamurthy’s right hand is shown in Jnana Mudra (the gesture of knowledge), and his left-hand holds sacred scriptures or leaf manuscripts. This iconography highlights his role as the divine teacher who dispels ignorance and imparts wisdom through silence and presence.

Thursdays are considered especially auspicious for worshipping Dakshinamurthy, and Guru Poornima is a significant occasion for special prayers and rituals in his honor.
